Facebook has told Bay Area employees to work from home as the coronavirus continues to spread. Facebook has become the latest Bay Area tech company to urge employees to work from home as the coronavirus takes hold in the region.
Starting Friday March 6, “we are strongly recommending that all Bay area employees and contingent staff work from home,” a company spokesman said in a statement Thursday night.
Twitter, Square, and LinkedIn have also urged employees to stay home.
Facebook’s decision was based on guidance from Santa Clara County, spokesman Anthony Harrison said by email, and “the health and safety of our teams, their loved ones and our neighbors remain a top priority.”
The company has pulled out of Bay Area events, including the cancellation of a company marketing conference in San Francisco this month, and, like a growing number of other firms, recommended that Bay Area employees no longer fly domestically or internationally for work.
Some essential workers who need to come to the office will not be subject to the new Facebook recommendations.
