Oakland wood artist Aleksandra Zee released her DIY and lifestyle book “The Way of the Woodshop” on Oct. 22, 2019. The cover of Aleksandra Zee ’s new book is beige and white: white type on beige background, white coveralls against Zee’s beige skin, beige and white strips of wood in neat geometric patterns that make up the Oakland artist’s signature panels. Even Zee’s adopted shop pup, Jack — staring up at her in the cover photo — fits the color scheme.
“He’s so cute. He matches everything. He’s beige,” Zee says with a laugh. “He sits here all day with the saws going and just sleeps.”
The book, “The Way of the Woodshop,” published Oct. 22 by William Morrow imprint Dey St., is Zee’s first. It’s a woodworking primer meets lifestyle meditation meets travel guide. There are DIY projects (from coasters to daybeds), how-to discourses (on home decor and “creative sourcing”) and hotel and hiking recommendations (in places like Big Sur and Joshua Tree, where Zee finds inspiration for her work). In between are photos in the same sun-bleached tones that fill Zee’s popular Instagram feed .
Zee, 33, credits the social media site with helping the publisher get to know her and envision “Woodshop,” likening it to a cookbook of favorite recipes that also chronicles an author’s heritage and travels.
